Introduction:
The 801-D rheological additive is a dispersible, self-activated organic ammonium montmorillonite organoclay, designed as the ideal rheological additive for low to medium aliphatic hydrocarbons, esters, ketones, as well as for paints and printing oils in high polar solvent systems. In medium to high polar solvents like xylene, butyl acetate, and cyclohexanone, it disperses seamlessly without an activator. However, for low polar solvents such as 200# solvent oil and white mineral oil, an activator (95% ethanol, at 30-40% of the organoclay's weight) is required. Comparable to Bentone-SD1, this product guarantees excellent dispersion and activation.
Application:
The 801-D rheological additive is a versatile and highly effective solution for a variety of applications including antiseptic paints, printing oils, boat paints, industrial decorative paints, car primers, and sealing materials.
Usage:
To incorporate the 801-D rheological additive, add it directly during the grinding process. Under the cutting power of grinding or whipping, the pigment disperses, and the 801-D fully activates. Follow these steps for optimal results:
1. Add resin/solvent.
2. Add the 801-D additive and whip at high speed for 10-20 minutes.
3. If using a low polar solvent (such as 200# solvent oil and white mineral oil), add a polar activator (like 95% ethanol) at 30-40% of the organoclay's weight, and whip at high speed for 10-20 minutes. For medium to high polar solvents (such as xylene or butyl acetate), the additive can be self-activated without an activator.
4. Add a wetting agent and pigment, and grind and disperse by whipping, ball-milling, or sanding to the required fineness.
5. Add other materials as per the formulation, and continue dispersing until even.
Dosage
The dosage of 801-D rheological additive in paint formulations is determined by the desired thickening effect, rheological control, and pigment precipitation characteristics. Commonly, the usage ranges from 0.5-1.5% of the total paint volume. It's recommended to start with the dosage of standard organoclays, usually finding that less 801-D is needed.
