Introduction:
The 801-D rheological additive is a high-performance dispersible, self-activated organic ammonium montmorillonite organoclay. It's designed to be the ultimate rheological solution for low to medium aliphatic hydrocarbons, esters, ketones, and certain high-polarity solvent systems used in paints and printing oils. In medium to high-polar solvent systems like xylene, butyl acetate, and cyclohexanone, the 801-D disperses effortlessly without the need for an activator. However, in low-polarity solvents such as 200# solvent oil and white mineral oil, an activator like 95% ethanol (30-40% of the organoclay's weight) is essential. Comparable to Bentone-SD1, this product ensures optimal dispersion and activation in diverse solvent environments.
Application:
801-D is a versatile and dispersible rheological additive suitable for a wide range of applications including antiseptic paints, printing oils, marine coatings, industrial decorative paints, automotive primers, and sealing materials.
Usage:
During the product grinding process, the 801-D rheological additive should be added directly. Under the high-shear forces of grinding or whipping, it will disperse and activate thoroughly. The standard procedure is as follows:
1. Add resin/solvent.
2. Introduce the 801-D additive and whip at high speed for 10-20 minutes.
3. For low-polarity solvents containing 200# solvent oil and white mineral oil, add a polar activator (e.g., 95% ethanol) at 30-40% of the organoclay weight and whip at high speed for 10-20 minutes. For medium to high-polarity solvent systems like xylene or xylene-butyl acetate, the additive disperses readily without the need for an activator.
4. Add a wetting agent and pigment, then grind and disperse (via whipping, ball-milling, or sanding) to achieve the desired fineness.
5. Continuously incorporate other ingredients until a uniform dispersion is achieved.
Dosage
The dosage of the 801-D rheological additive in paint formulations is contingent upon the desired thickening effect, rheological performance, and pigment settling characteristics. The typical dosage range is 0.5-1.5% of the total paint volume. Generally, it can be calibrated based on the usage rates of conventional organoclays, often resulting in lower quantities than those traditionally required.
