Introduction:
The 801-D Rheological Additive represents a breakthrough in self-activating organic ammonium montmorillonite organoclay technology. Designed specifically for low- to medium-polarity aliphatic hydrocarbons, esters, and ketones, it excels in enhancing the performance of paints and printing oils within high-polar solvent systems. Unique in its formulation, the 801-D can self-activate and disperse in medium-high polar solvents such as xylene, butyl acetate, and cyclohexanone without the need for an activator. For low-polar solvents containing 200# solvent oil and white oil (mineral alcohol), the addition of a polar activator (e.g., 95% ethanol, 30-40% of the organoclay's weight) is necessary. This product is a sophisticated alternative to Bentone-SD1.
Applications:
The 801-D is a versatile, broad-spectrum rheological additive suitable for a variety of applications including antiseptic paint, printing oil, boat paint, industrial decorative paint, car primer coats, and sealing materials.
Usage Instructions:
Incorporate the 801-D rheological additive directly during the grinding phase of product formulation. Under the mechanical force of grinding or whipping, the pigment will be fully dispersed and the additive will be completely activated. Follow these recommended steps for optimal results:
1. Add resin/solvent
2. Introduce the 801-D additive and whip at high speed for 10-20 minutes
3. For low-polar solvents containing 200# solvent oil and white oil aliphatic hydrocarbon, add a polar activator (such as 95% ethanol, 30-40% of the organoclay's weight) and whip at high speed for 10-20 minutes. For medium-high polar solvent systems with xylene or xylene-butyl acetate, no activator is required for self-activation and dispersion.
4. Add wetting agents and pigments, then grind and disperse using whipping, ball-milling, or sanding until the desired fineness is achieved.
5. Add other formula ingredients and continue dispersing until uniform.
Dosage Guidelines
The dosage of the 801-D rheological additive in paint formulations depends on the needed thickening effect, rheological performance control, and pigment precipitation level. Typically, the dosage ranges from 0.5-1.5% of the total paint volume and can be adjusted based on pre-optimization trials. Generally, a lower dosage is required compared to standard organoclays.
