Introduction:
The 801-D rheological additive is a dispersible, self-activated organic ammonium montmorillonite organoclay. This versatile additive is specially designed for low to medium aliphatic hydrocarbons, esters, ketones, and high-polar solvent systems including paint and printing oil applications. In medium-high polar solvents like xylene, butyl acetate, and cyclohexanone, 801-D disperses effortlessly without the need for additional activators. However, for low polar solvents such as 200# solvent oil and white oil, the addition of an activator (like 95% ethanol, at 30-40% weight of the organoclay) is required for effective dispersion. This product offers a comparable performance to Bentone-SD1.
Application:
The 801-D rheological additive boasts a broad spectrum of applications. It's perfect for antiseptic paint, printing oil, boat paint, industrial decorative paint, car primer coats, and sealing materials.
Usage:
For optimal use, the 801-D rheological additive should be incorporated during the grinding process. Under the cutting power of grinding or whipping, the pigment is fully dispersed and the 801-D is completely activated. Follow these steps for best results:
1. Add resin/solvent
2. Incorporate the 801-D additive and whip at high speed for 10-20 minutes.
3. If using low polar solvents (200# solvent oil, white oil aliphatic hydrocarbons), add a polar activator (e.g., 95% ethanol) at 30-40% of the organoclay weight and whip at high speed for 10-20 minutes. For medium-high polar solvent systems (xylene, xylene-butyl acetate), no activator is needed as the additive self-activates.
4. Add wetting agent and pigment, then grind and disperse (via whipping, ball-milling, or sanding) to the desired fineness.
5. Introduce other materials and continue dispersing until the mixture is even.
Dosage
The dosage of the 801-D rheological additive in paint depends on the required thickening effect, rheological performance, and pigment precipitation. Generally, the dosage ranges from 0.5-1.5% of the total paint amount. It can be adjusted according to the common organoclay dosage prior to optimization. Typically, less 801-D is needed compared to common organoclay.
