Product Description

Introduction:
801-D rheological additive is a high-performance, dispersible, self-activated organic ammonium montmorillonite organoclay. It is designed to enhance rheological properties in low to medium aliphatic hydrocarbons, esters, ketones, and certain high polar solvent systems including paints and printing oils. In medium to high polar solvent systems like xylene, ester (e.g., butyl acetate), and ketone (e.g., cyclohexanone), it disperses without the need for an activator. However, in low polar solvents such as 200# solvent oil and mineral alcohol (white oil), an activator like 95% ethanol (30-40% the weight of the organoclay) is required for optimal dispersion. This product is comparable to Bentone-SD1.

Application:
801-D is a versatile, broad-spectrum rheological additive suitable for use in antiseptic paints, printing oils, marine paints, industrial decorative paints, automotive primer coats, and sealing materials.

Usage:
To incorporate the 801-D rheological additive, add it directly during the grinding process. Under the intense shear forces of grinding or whipping, it will fully disperse and activate. The recommended procedure includes:
1. Add resin/solvent
2. Add 801-D additive and whip at high speed for 10-20 minutes.
3. If using low polar solvents such as 200# solvent oil and white oil, add a polar activator (e.g., 95% ethanol) at 30-40% the weight of the organoclay and whip at high speed for 10-20 minutes. For medium to high polar solvent systems like xylene or xylene-butyl acetate, the additive will self-activate and disperse without an activator.
4. Add wetting agents and pigments, then grind and disperse (using whipping, ball-milling, or sanding) to achieve the desired fineness.
5. Add other ingredients in the formulation and continue dispersing until the mixture is uniform.

Dosage
The amount of 801-D rheological additive used in paint formulations depends on the desired thickening effect, rheological control, and pigment settling behavior. Typical usage ranges from 0.5-1.5% of the total paint volume. It can generally be dosed similarly to common organoclays, although usually, less 801-D is needed compared to conventional organoclays.
