Introduction:
The 801-D rheological additive is a superior dispersible, self-activated organic ammonium montmorillonite organoclay. This advanced additive is designed specifically for use in low to medium polarity aliphatic hydrocarbons, esters, ketones, and is highly effective in paints and printing oils within certain high-polar solvent systems. Remarkably, in medium to high-polar solvent systems such as xylene, butyl acetate, and cyclohexanone, 801-D can disperse and activate itself without the need for additional activators. However, in low-polar solvents like 200# solvent oil and white oil, an activator (95% ethanol at 30-40% weight of the organoclay) is required to achieve dispersion. This product's performance is on par with Bentone-SD1.
Application:
801-D is a versatile rheological additive suitable for a wide range of applications, including antiseptic paints, printing oils, boat paints, industrial decorative paints, car primer coats, and sealing materials. Its broad-spectrum capabilities make it an essential component in various industrial formulations.
Usage:
For optimal results, add the 801-D rheological additive directly during the grinding process. Under the shearing forces of grinding or whipping, the additive will fully disperse and activate, ensuring uniform pigment distribution. Follow these steps for best outcomes:
1. Add resin/solvent
2. Add 801-D additive and whip at high speed for 10-20 minutes
3. If using a low-polar solvent like 200# solvent oil or white oil, introduce a polar activator (95% ethanol) at 30-40% weight of the organoclay and whip at high speed for 10-20 minutes. For medium-high polar solvent systems with xylene or xylene-butyl acetate, the additive will self-activate and disperse without an activator.
4. Add a wetting agent, pigment, and grind using a method such as whipping, ball-milling, or sanding until the desired fineness is achieved.
5. Introduce other materials as per the formulation and continue dispersing until the mixture is uniform.
Dosage
The recommended dosage of 801-D rheological additive in paint formulations depends on the required thickening effect, desired rheological properties, and the extent of pigment precipitation. Typically, the dosage ranges from 0.5-1.5% of the total paint amount. In comparison to common organoclays, 801-D generally requires a lower dosage to achieve optimal performance.
