Introduction:
The 801-D Rheological Additive is a versatile and self-activating organic ammonium montmorillonite organoclay. It's designed specifically for use in low-medium aliphatic hydrocarbons, esters, ketones, as well as in high-polar solvents such as xylene and butyl acetate. In these medium-high polar solvent systems, it disperses effortlessly without the need for an activator. However, when using it with low polar solvents like 200# solvent oil or white oil (mineral alcohol), the addition of an activator (e.g., 95% ethanol at 30-40% of the organoclay's weight) is necessary. This product shares similarities with Bentone-SD1, ensuring reliable performance across various solvent systems.
Application:
The 801-D Rheological Additive is a broad-spectrum product, perfect for antiseptic paints, printing oils, boat paints, industrial decorative paints, car primer coats, and sealing materials. Its wide range of applications makes it an essential choice for enhancing viscosity and flow characteristics.
Usage:
Incorporate the 801-D Rheological Additive directly during the grinding process. Under the shear force of grinding or whipping, it will fully disperse and activate, ensuring optimal pigment distribution. Follow these steps for best results:
1. Add resin/solvent.
2. Introduce the 801-D additive and mix at high speed for 10-20 minutes.
3. For low polar solvents containing 200# solvent oil or white oil aliphatic hydrocarbons, add a polar activator (e.g., 95% ethanol) at 30-40% of the organoclay's weight, then mix at high speed for 10-20 minutes. For medium-high polar solvents like xylene or xylene-butyl acetate, no activator is needed for self-activation.
4. Add a wetting agent and pigment, then grind and disperse using methods like whipping, ball-milling, or sanding to achieve the desired fineness.
5. Incorporate other materials in the formula and continue dispersing until homogenous.
Dosage
The appropriate dosage of 801-D Rheological Additive in paint formulations is typically within the range of 0.5-1.5% by weight of the total paint, depending on the desired thickening effect, rheological control requirements, and pigment settling tendencies. Generally, less of this additive is needed compared to conventional organoclays.
