Introduction:
The 801-D Rheological Additive is a superior dispersible, self-activated organic ammonium montmorillonite organoclay. Designed for a variety of solvent systems, it excels in low-medium aliphatic hydrocarbons, esters, ketones, and specific high-polar solvent systems used in paints, printing inks, and more. In medium-high polar solvent systems such as xylene, xylene-butyl acetate, and cyclohexanone, it disperses effortlessly without an activator. However, in low-polar solvents, such as those containing 200# solvent oil and white oil, the addition of a polar activator (95% ethanol) at 30-40% of the organoclay's weight is necessary for proper dispersion. Comparable to Bentone-SD1, 801-D offers unparalleled performance.
Application:
801-D is a versatile, broad-spectrum rheological additive. It finds its applications in antiseptic paints, printing inks, marine coatings, industrial decorative paints, automotive primers, and sealing materials, providing enhanced performance and stability.
Usage:
The 801-D Rheological Additive should be incorporated during the grinding phase of production. Under the shear forces of grinding or whipping, the additive fully disperses and activates, ensuring a consistent and effective mix. Follow these steps for optimal usage:
1. Add resin/solvent.
2. Introduce the 801-D additive, whipping at high speeds for 10-20 minutes.
3. For low-polarsolvent systems with 200# solvent oil and white oil, incorporate a polar activator (95% ethanol) at 30-40% of the weight of the organoclay, and whip at high speed for 10-20 minutes. For medium-high polar solvent systems such as xylene and xylene-butyl acetate, the additive disperses without the need for an activator.
4. Add a wetting agent and pigment, then grind and disperse using methods like whipping, ball-milling, or sanding until the desired fineness is achieved.
5. Integrate other ingredients and continue dispersing until a uniform mixture is obtained.
Dosage
The dosage of the 801-D Rheological Additive in paint formulations depends on the desired thickening effect, rheological performance requirements, and the degree of pigment sedimentation. Typically, the dosage ranges from 0.5% to 1.5% of the total paint volume. Generally, this additive's dosage is lower than that of standard organoclays, making it an efficient choice.
