Introduction:
The 801-D rheological additive stands as a pioneering dispersible, self-activated organic ammonium montmorillonite organoclay. This exceptional additive is tailored specifically for low to medium aliphatic hydrocarbons, esters, and ketones, finding its niche in paint and printing oils within some high polar solvent systems. In medium to high polar solvent systems involving xylene, xylene esters (such as butyl acetate), and xylene ketones (such as cyclohexanone), the 801-D showcases its self-activating dispersion prowess, negating the need for activators. However, in low polar solvents leveraging 200# solvent oil and white oil (mineral alcohol) aliphatic hydrocarbons, the addition of an activator is necessary for optimal dispersion (95% ethanol, at 30-40% weight of the organoclay). This product parallels the performance of Bentone-SD1, offering unparalleled versatility and efficacy.
Application:
The 801-D is a versatile, broad-spectrum rheological additive, perfect for applications in antiseptic paints, printing oils, boat paints, industrial decorative paints, car primer coats, and sealing materials. Its adaptability makes it an indispensable component across a wide array of industries.
Usage:
For optimal results, the 801-D rheological additive should be integrated directly during the grinding process of product creation. Under the mechanical action of grinding or whipping, the additive will thoroughly disperse and activate, ensuring seamless pigment dispersal. The standard usage protocol is as follows:
1. Introduce resin/solvent into the mix.
2. Add the 801-D additive and whip at high speed for 10-20 minutes.
3. If utilizing a low polar solvent with 200# solvent oil and white oil aliphatic hydrocarbon, incorporate a polar activator (such as 95% ethanol) at 30-40% of the organoclay's weight. Whip at high speed for 10-20 minutes. For medium to high polar solvent systems with xylene, xylene-butyl acetate, the additive can self-activate without the need for an activator.
4. Add wetting agent and pigment, then proceed with grinding and dispersing (via whipping, ball-milling, or sanding) to achieve the desired fineness.
5. Introduce other formulation materials and continue to disperse until uniformly mixed.
Dosage
The dosage of the 801-D rheological additive in paint formulations is determined by the required thickening effect, rheological performance, and pigment precipitation degree. Typically, the dosage ranges from 0.5-1.5% of the total paint volume. It is generally advised to approximate the dosage based on the usage of conventional organoclay prior to optimization. Notably, the 801-D often requires a lower dosage compared to standard organoclays.
