Introduction:
The 801-D rheological additive is a versatile, self-activating organic ammonium montmorillonite organoclay. Designed for low to medium aliphatic hydrocarbons, esters, ketones, paints, and printing oils in high-polar solvent systems, this additive excels in rheological performance. In certain medium to high-polar solvent systems like xylene, butyl acetate, and cyclohexanone, it activates without the need for additional agents. However, in low-polar solvents, such as those containing 200# solvent oil and white oil (mineral alcohol), it requires an activator like 95% ethanol (30-40% weight of the organoclay). Comparable to Bentone-SD1, the 801-D ensures superior dispersion and rheological control.
Application:
The 801-D rheological additive boasts broad-spectrum capabilities, making it ideal for use in antiseptic paints, printing oils, marine coatings, industrial decorative paints, automotive primer coats, and sealing materials.
Usage:
Integrate the 801-D rheological additive during the grinding phase of product manufacturing. Under the shearing force of grinding or whipping, the 801-D disperses and activates fully. Typical usage steps include:
1. Add resin/solvent
2. Incorporate the 801-D additive and whip at high speed for 10-20 minutes.
3. For low-polar solvents (200# solvent oil, white oil aliphatic hydrocarbon), add a polar activator (such as 95% ethanol) at 30-40% of the organoclay's weight, then whip at high speed for 10-20 minutes. For medium-high polar solvents (xylene, xylene-butyl acetate), the additive self-activates without an activator.
4. Add wetting agent and pigment, then grind and disperse (whipping, ball-milling, sanding) to the desired fineness.
5. Add other ingredients and continue to disperse until uniformly mixed.
Dosage
The dosage of the 801-D rheological additive in paint formulations is determined by the desired thickening effect, rheological performance requirements, and the degree of pigment precipitation. Typically, the dosage ranges between 0.5-1.5% of the total paint volume. Optimal dosage can be approximated based on the usage of conventional organoclays, with the 801-D usually requiring a lesser amount.
