Introduction:
801-D rheological additive is a premium dispersible, self-activated organic ammonium montmorillonite organoclay. It's the ideal rheological enhancer for low to medium aliphatic hydrocarbons, esters, ketones, as well as paints and printing oils in certain high-polar solvent systems. In medium-high polar solvents such as xylene, butyl acetate, and cyclohexanone, it self-activates and disperses effortlessly without an activator. However, in low-polar solvent systems containing 200# solvent oil and white oil (mineral alcohol) aliphatic hydrocarbons, an activator (95% ethanol, 30-40% weight of the organoclay) is necessary for optimal dispersion. Comparable to Bentone-SD1, 801-D stands out for its versatility and efficiency.
Application:
801-D is a versatile, dispersible broad-spectrum rheological additive. It finds application in antiseptic paints, printing oils, marine paints, industrial decorative coatings, automotive primers, and sealing materials.
Usage:
801-D rheological additive is integrated during the grinding phase of product formulation. Under the mechanical force of grinding or whipping, 801-D disperses and activates fully. The recommended usage steps are as follows:
1. Add resin/solvent.
2. Introduce 801-D additive and whip at high speed for 10-20 minutes.
3. For low-polar solvent systems with 200# solvent oil and white oil aliphatic hydrocarbons, add a polar activator (such as 95% ethanol) in an amount equal to 30-40% of the organoclay's weight. Whip at high speed for 10-20 minutes. For medium-high polar solvent systems like xylene-butyl acetate, the organoclay self-disperses without the need for an activator.
4. Add wetting agent and pigment, then grind and disperse (via whipping, ball-milling, or sanding) to the desired fineness.
5. Introduce other formulation ingredients and continue dispersion until uniform.
Dosage
The recommended dosage of 801-D rheological additive in paint formulations is determined by the desired thickening effect, rheological performance, and pigment precipitation characteristics. Typically, the dosage ranges from 0.5-1.5% of the total paint volume. In practice, the required amount is generally lower than that of conventional organoclays, making 801-D a cost-effective choice.
