Introduction:
The 801-D Rheological Additive stands as a multifaceted, self-activated organic ammonium montmorillonite organoclay, engineered to excel in a range of solvent systems. This premium rheological modifier seamlessly integrates into low-medium aliphatic hydrocarbons, esters, ketones, and high-polar solvent systems like paint and printing oil. In medium-high polar environments such as xylene, xylene-ester (e.g., butyl acetate), and xylene-ketone (e.g., cyclohexanone), 801-D disperses effortlessly without needing an activator. However, for low-polar solvents mixed with 200# solvent oil and white oil (mineral alcohol) aliphatic hydrocarbons, an activator (95% ethanol, at 30-40% of the organoclay's weight) ensures optimal dispersion. With attributes comparable to Bentone-SD1, 801-D guarantees both reliability and unmatched performance.
Application:
801-D is an exceptionally versatile, easily dispersible rheological additive suitable for a plethora of uses. This includes antiseptic paints, printing oils, marine paints, industrial decorative coatings, automotive primer coats, and sealing materials.
Usage:
For peak performance, integrate the 801-D rheological additive directly during the grinding process. The rigorous cutting power of either grinding or whipping ensures the pigment disperses effectively, fully activating the 801-D. Follow these streamlined steps for optimal usage:
1. Add resin/solvent.
2. Introduce the 801-D additive and whip at high speed for 10-20 minutes.
3. For low-polar solvents combined with 200# solvent oil and white oil aliphatic hydrocarbons, include a polar activator (e.g., 95% ethanol) at 30-40% of the organoclay's weight, and whip at high speed for 10-20 minutes. In medium-high polar solvents like xylene or xylene-butyl acetate, self-activation occurs naturally without an activator.
4. Add a wetting agent and pigment, then proceed to grind and disperse using whipping, ball-milling, or sanding methods to achieve the desired fineness.
5. Finally, incorporate the remaining formulation materials, ensuring continuous dispersion for consistent uniformity.
Dosage
The optimal dosage of the 801-D rheological additive in paints depends on the desired thickening effect, rheological performance requirements, and the degree of pigment precipitation. Typically, the recommended dosage ranges from 0.5-1.5% of the paint volume. It is advisable to start with conventional organoclay dosage benchmarks before fine-tuning, as the 801-D generally necessitates a lower quantity compared to standard organoclays.
