Introduction:
The 801-D rheological additive is a specially formulated, dispersible, self-activating organic ammonium montmorillonite organoclay. It is designed for low-medium aliphatic hydrocarbons, esters, and ketones, as well as paints and printing oils in high-polarity solvent systems. In medium-high polarity solvents like xylene, esters (e.g., butyl acetate), and ketones (e.g., cyclohexanone), it disperses effortlessly without an activator. However, in low-polarity solvents such as 200# solvent oil and white oil (mineral alcohol) aliphatic hydrocarbons, it requires an activator (95% ethanol, 30-40% weight of the organoclay) for effective dispersion. This product is comparable to Bentone-SD1.
Application:
The 801-D is a versatile, dispersible rheological additive ideal for antiseptic paints, printing inks, marine coatings, industrial decorative paints, automotive primer coats, and sealing materials.
Usage:
The 801-D rheological additive should be directly added during the grinding stage of production. Under the mechanical force of grinding or whipping, the pigment disperses and activates the 801-D completely. The standard usage procedure includes:
Adding resin/solvent
Incorporating the 801-D additive and whipping at high speed for 10-20 minutes
For low-polarity solvents with 200# solvent oil and white oil aliphatic hydrocarbons, introduce a polar activator (e.g., 95% ethanol), 30-40% weight of the organoclay, and whip at high speed for 10-20 minutes. For medium-high polarity solvent systems like xylene and xylene-butyl acetate, the 801-D disperses automatically without an activator.
Adding a wetting agent and pigment, then grinding and dispersing (via whipping, ball-milling, or sanding) to the desired fineness
Incorporating other ingredients and continuously dispersing until a uniform mixture is achieved.
Dosage
The dosage of 801-D rheological additive in paint formulations depends on the desired thickening effect, rheological performance requirements, and the degree of pigment settling. The typical dosage range is 0.5-1.5% of the total paint volume. Generally, it can be adjusted based on the standard dosage of conventional organoclay before optimization. The 801-D typically requires a smaller dosage compared to traditional organoclays.
