Introduction:
801-D rheological additive is a state-of-the-art, dispersible, self-activated organic ammonium montmorillonite organoclay. This exceptional rheological additive is tailored for low-to-medium aliphatic hydrocarbons, esters, ketones, and is integral to paint and printing oil formulations within certain high polar solvent systems. In medium-to-high polar solvents like xylene, xylene-esters (e.g., butyl acetate), and xylene-ketones (e.g., cyclohexanone), the 801-D disperses effortlessly without the need for an activator. Conversely, in low polar solvents with 200# solvent oil and white oil (mineral alcohol) aliphatic hydrocarbons, it requires the addition of an activator such as 95% ethanol (30-40% weight of the organoclay). This product stands as a premium alternative to Bentone-SD1.
Application:
801-D is a versatile, dispersible rheological additive that finds extensive use in antiseptic paints, printing oils, marine coatings, industrial decorative paints, automotive primers, and sealants.
Usage:
During the product manufacturing process, the 801-D rheological additive is incorporated directly during the grinding phase. Under the cutting power of grinding or whipping, it disperses and activates fully. The typical usage procedure is as follows:
Add resin/solvent
Incorporate 801-D additive and whip at high speed for 10-20 minutes
In the case of low polar solvents with 200# solvent oil and white oil aliphatic hydrocarbons, introduce a polar activator (e.g., 95% ethanol) at 30-40% weight of the organoclay, and whip at high speed for 10-20 minutes. For medium-to-high polar solvent systems such as xylene, xylene-butyl acetate, the additive disperses without the need for activators.
Add wetting agent and pigment, then grind and disperse by whipping, ball-milling, or sanding until the desired fineness is achieved.
Incorporate other materials in the formulation and continue dispersing until uniform.
Dosage
The dosage of the 801-D rheological additive in paint formulations depends on the desired thickening effect, rheological performance requirements, and pigment precipitation levels. The typical dosage range is 0.5-1.5% of the total paint volume. It can be adjusted based on the dosage of conventional organoclays. Generally, the 801-D requires a lesser amount compared to traditional organoclays.
