Introduction:
801-D rheological additive is a high-performance, dispersible, self-activated organic ammonium montmorillonite organoclay. It serves as a superior rheological agent for low to medium aliphatic hydrocarbons, esters, and ketones, making it ideal for paints and printing oils in various high polar solvent systems. In medium to high polar solvents like xylene, butyl acetate, and cyclohexanone, it disperses effortlessly without an activator, whereas in low polar solvents like 200# solvent oil and white oil, an activator (95% ethanol, 30-40% weight of the organoclay) is required to achieve optimal dispersion. This innovative product is comparable to Bentone-SD1.
Application:
801-D is a versatile, dispersible rheological additive suitable for a wide range of applications including antiseptic paints, printing oils, marine coatings, industrial decorative paints, automotive primers, and sealing materials.
Usage:
During the product manufacturing process, 801-D rheological additive should be added directly during the grinding stage. Under the cutting forces of grinding or whipping, the pigment disperses, and 801-D activates completely. The standard usage protocol is as follows:
1. Add resin/solvent
2. Introduce 801-D additive and whip at high speed for 10-20 minutes.
3. If using a low polar solvent with 200# solvent oil and white oil aliphatic hydrocarbon, add a polar activator (such as 95% ethanol) at 30-40% of the organoclay’s weight. Whip at high speed for 10-20 minutes. For medium-high polar solvent systems like xylene or xylene-butyl acetate, it can be dispersed self-activatedly without an activator.
4. Add wetting agent and pigment, then grind and disperse using whipping, ball-milling, or sanding until the desired fineness is achieved.
5. Incorporate other ingredients and continue to disperse until the mixture is uniform.
Dosage
The dosage of 801-D rheological additive in paint formulations is determined based on the desired thickening effect, rheological performance requirements, and pigment's precipitation level. The typical dosage range is 0.5-1.5% of the total paint volume. It is generally advised to calibrate the amount used according to the common organoclay dosage before optimization, noting that the required dosage for 801-D is usually less.
