Introduction:
The 801-D Rheological Additive is a versatile, self-activated organic ammonium montmorillonite organoclay that excels in enhancing the rheology of various formulations. This powerful additive disperses seamlessly in low to medium aliphatic hydrocarbons, esters, ketones, and certain high-polar solvent systems like xylene and butyl acetate. Unlike other additives, it self-activates in medium-high polar solvent systems, negating the need for external activators. For low-polar solvents, a polar activator such as 95% ethanol (30-40% by weight) is recommended. Comparable to Bentone-SD1, our additive ensures consistent performance and superior quality.
Application:
The 801-D Rheological Additive is a highly dispersible, broad-spectrum solution suitable for use in antiseptic paints, industrial decorative paints, boat paints, printing inks, car primer coats, and sealing materials. Its versatility makes it an essential component in multiple industrial applications.
Usage:
To achieve optimal results, incorporate the 801-D Rheological Additive during the grinding process. As the high shear forces of grinding or whipping activate the additive, it will disperse and perform effectively. Follow these steps for best results:
1. Add resin/solvent
2. Introduce the 801-D additive and whip at high speed for 10-20 minutes
3. If using low polar solvents with 200# solvent oil or white oil aliphatic hydrocarbons, add a polar activator (such as 95% ethanol), 30-40% by weight of the organoclay, and whip at high speed for 10-20 minutes. For medium-high polar solvent systems like xylene or xylene-butyl acetate, the additive disperses and activates without additional activators.
4. Add wetting agent and pigment, then grind and disperse (whipping, ball-milling, sanding) to achieve the desired fineness
5. Incorporate other ingredients and continue dispersing until the mixture is homogeneous.
Dosage
The dosage of the 801-D Rheological Additive in paint formulations is influenced by the desired thickening effect, rheological control requirements, and the degree of pigment precipitation. Typically, its usage ranges from 0.5-1.5% of the total paint volume. It is advisable to start with the customary dosage of common organoclay and adjust as needed. Generally, this additive requires a lower dosage compared to standard organoclays.
